Earlier this year Blizzard patched Warcraft III and Diablo II so they’d run on modern systems, a gracious move on its part. But news that the almost twenty-year-old StarCraft might receive a full HD remaster? That’s a whole different—and infinitely more complex—beast.
The rumor arrives via Korean site iNews24, then translated by Kotaku. Details are scant at the moment, but the remaster will reportedly feature more resolution choices (as you’d expect) and overhaul the UI. It sounds like a purely cosmetic touch-up though, as the blurb says it will “retain the original gameplay.” There's no word whether Brood War is included in this project.
Heck, we have no idea whether the rumor is even true, for that matter! We won’t have to wait long, though—iNews24 reports that Blizzard will unveil the game in September, with more details to follow at the company’s annual BlizzCon convention in November.
It’s hard for me to get really excited about the words “HD Remaster” nowadays, with so many half-finished cash grabs and remasters of games that are only five or six years old, but this is how it should be done—resurrecting a beloved classic from quite a long time ago, artwork faithfully restored but the game left untouched. Hopefully that’s the reality here. We’ll keep you updated on the situation.
