Lenovo's Phab 2 Pro has been kicked back to the fall after an initial promise of a summer debut.
Lenovo’s Phab 2 Pro promises to be a pretty unique smartphone as the first one with Google’s Tango technology.
This makes the phone spatially aware, enabling it to scan the room to determine its exact position in space, or overlay virtual objects onto the screen. Unfortunately, it appears you’re going to have to wait a little longer in order to get your hands on this piece of the future.
The Phab 2 Pro has been kicked back to a fall launch after initially being promised for this summer, according to the official launch page. It now says “coming this fall” where it previously said “summer.”
While it’s sure to disappoint you if your eye was on the giant (a 6.4-inch screen!) phone, it’s also bad news for Lowe’s and Wayfair, which both built custom apps that tap into the Phab 2 Pro’s spatial awareness.
You’ll be able to virtually view how furniture will look and fit inside your room thanks to the augmented reality capabilities. You can then order the products online or come into a Lowe’s store to select them yourself.
The best guess as to the delay is that Lenovo hasn’t finished up all the work needed to ensure the phone gets off to a good start at launch, and that Google's software needs a little more tweaking and tuning. Given those exploding Note 7s, a little extra time to get things right couldn’t hurt.
Why this matters: Tango has graduated from the “project” stage (unlike Project Ara, which bit the dust), so this doesn’t appear to indicate any kind of backpedaling on Google’s part. However, the holiday season is creeping our way so expect Lenovo to redouble the efforts at getting this out the door as soon as possible.
